Despite both working for the SmackDown brand from 2002-05, Eddie Guerrero and The Undertaker never had a singles match against each other and actually had very little interaction whatsoever. Fans caught a glimpse of Eddie versus The Undertaker during the Armageddon 2004 main event, a fatal four way match also featuring JBL and Booker T. The exchanges between Latino Heat and The Deadman were the highlight of the entire show as the two proved to have instant chemistry with each other.

With Eddie turning heel in 2005 and doing some of the best work of his career and Undertaker as one of SmackDown's top faces, it seemed logical that the two might have crossed paths at some point. Unfortunately, the only singles matches the two had were four house show main events in August 2005. Former WWE writer Court Bauer said on episode 59 of the MLW radio show that these matches between Eddie and The Undertaker were some of the best he had ever seen in his life and that Guerrero really brought it against the locker room leader. Apparently one match consisted of Eddie constantly working over the Undertaker's eye, which is a novel piece of psychology that only somebody like Eddie could come up with.

After the glowing reviews their matches on the road received, consideration was given to bringing the match to TV and pay-per-view before Vince nixed the idea. Apparently he thought the size difference would be too much to overcome, which is ridiculous since he booked Eddie versus Batista just a month or two later.
