https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WN5uLr-Wc-0 As strange as that might sound, its true: long before either one of them could even be considered a prospect for one of the big promotions, Cena and Joe were rookies (and friends) in the California-based Ultimate Pro Wrestling promotion. It made sense for Joe to start out over there, as he was born and raised in southern California, while Cena ended up over there because it was a WWE-affiliated training promotion. At the time, John Cena was working under his Prototype gimmick, while Samoa Joe waswell, Samoa Joe, only smaller and with more hair on his head. Looking back on that match, its interesting to see how both men ended up. Cena, who had an awesome physique even back then, would depart for WWE very soon afterwards, and started wrestling on SmackDown TV in 2002. Joe, meanwhile, kept working in various independent promotions, until he started truly making a name for himself in Ring of Honor and in TNA. Both men have achieved World Title glory, though Cena experienced it much more than Joe, even though both of them were working for the same developmental promotion at the same time.
