He was involved in top programmes with Hulk Hogan and Kurt Angle, and looked in far better shape than at any other stage of his career. However, Bubba also earned two separate shots at a pair of more prestigious world titles far earlier in his career. In late 2000, he faced Kurt Angle in a Smackdown match for the WWE Championship, a result of the Dudley Boyz's initial popularity. Unfortunately (but somewhat predictably, given Angle's immense popularity) he lost. His second world title shot came after the brand split forced the Boyz apart, D-Von going over to Smackdown, Bubba competing exclusively on Raw. Although he wouldn't regain the same magnitude of crowd reactions as he did with D-Von, Bubba would find some success, winning multiple Hardcore Championships.
