10 Things You Didn’t Know About The WWE Draft

2. The Nearly-Man Of The Draft

RIC FLAIR DRAFT PICK

Speaking of Slater, he might go down as the nearly-man of this year’s Draft, but he’s got stiff competition for that title from an Olympic Gold Medallist in Kurt Angle.

Of course, Kurt’s circumstances were rather different to those of Slater. Rather than narrowly missing out on being drafted at all, Kurt narrowly missed out on the number one spot in each of the three Drafts he was eligible for.

Every year he managed a top three spot in the Draft overall though, and furthermore, every year he was his brand’s second pick. 2002 saw him drafted second for SmackDown and third overall, in 2005 he was Raw’s second pick and again third overall, while 2006 saw him go to ECW as the second overall pick.

On the one hand, that shows that Kurt was consistently one of the very best, whichever roster he appeared for. But it also means he was never quite the top dog, though that’s not too surprising given the era he competed in.
