10 Things You Didn't Know About The WWE Title

8. 1999 Had The Most Changes Ever

1999 was a time to be alive, people. WCW was hitting the skids, ECW was struggling to gain a foothold on national TV, and the WWF was passing the biggest belt in the land around like a share bag of sweeties. '99 still holds the record for most WWF/WWE Title switches in one calendar year.

The belt changed hands 11 times that year alone. Eek!

To put that into context, the title has changed just 11 times between 2019-2024. You'd have to stretch back to Brock Lesnar's run in 2019 to find an equivalent to how many happened in 1999. Vince Russo will take some of the flak as head writer, but it was Vince McMahon who had to green light all of them; and he won the strap himself!

Being fair, there were some cracking champs that year. Mick Foley ascended the throne right at the start, then others like The Rock, Triple H, Steve Austin and The Undertaker worked stints on top too. Hunter is unlikely to book this volume of title switches in the future.
