10 Things You Didn’t Know About Ultimo Dragon

7. His Matches With Chris Jericho Helped Get Y2J A Job With ECW

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHl4fdLbw64 Chris Jericho desperately wanted to work for ECW in the mid-90s, but he could never seem to get booker Paul Heyman on the phone. He came close one time in 1994, when Heyman told Chris Benoit that he wanted him and Jericho to square off on a card in Philadelphia but, unfortunately, Jericho was at least six hours away and there were no flight available, meaning he missed the booking. Of course Jericho did end up in ECW in eventually, thanks in large part to Ultimo Dragon. ECW regular Mick Foley attended a Wrestle and Romance (don't ask) show in 1995 and was blown away by one bout in particular: Chris Jericho versus Ultimo Dragon. Dragon was a favourite opponent of Jericho's and they had many sterling matches in Mexico and Japan. Foley passed a tape of the contest on to Paul Heyman, who was similarly blown away. After viewing the match, Heyman supposedly told Y2J that he considered him a future ECW Champion. Had Foley not been in attendance that evening and seen the magic of Jericho versus Ultimo, Y2J may not have made it to ECW. That Jericho was in the ring with Dragon no doubt helped his cause considerably and made him look as good as he possible could.
