One of the biggest criticisms levelled at the current WWE product, by both fans and former wrestlers, is that WWE is overly-scripted and micromanaged these days. Indeed, WWE take no chances when it comes to wrestlers matches, promos and segments, which has meant that the show has lost its unpredictable edge. Back in the Attitude Era, however, wrestlers were given more creative leeway. There were writers and road agents, true, but Vince and company were a lot more willing to let the wrestlers try things out for themselves and improvise. When Val Venis came to the WWE, his only instruction was that he was to play an adult film star. It was Venis who added the 'Hello, ladies' catchphrase and wearing a white towel to the ring. These touches helped define the character and made Venis an instantly recognisable presence on shows. Venis was also entrusted with coming up with the numerous jokes and double-entendres that his character spouted during promos.
