10 Things You Didn't Know About WWE SummerSlam

9. The British Bulldog Was In Really Bad Shape During 1992 Classic

The main event of SummerSlam 1992 was Davey Boy Smith's finest hour: the British Bulldog won the Intercontinental Title in a five-star match in front of 80,000 fans at Wembley Stadium. It was a storybook moment for Smith, a storybook moment that almost didn't happen. As Bret described in his book, Davey had spent much of the summer on the bench and had developed a pretty serious drug problem. The Hitman, who had hand-picked Bulldog to have a classic match with, was miffed. The British star turned up to SummerSlam completely out-of-shape. As well as being gassed a minute into the contest, Smith's mind was also fried and he couldn't remember any of the spots and Bret had to call the whole thing to him in the ring. Thanks to a hurculean effort from the Excellence of Execution, the match went as planned, and turned out even better than he had hoped. Bret has called carrying his far gone brother-in-law to a classic his greatest in-ring accomplishment.
