10 Things You Didn't Know About WWE SummerSlam

7. The Original SummerSlam 1988 Main Event

When Nature Boy Ric Flair showed up in a WWE ring in 1991, it was an 'Alien shaking hands with the president' moment for many hardcore wrestling fans. Here was Ric Flair, a man synonymous with WCW/NWA, appearing on WWE programming. Mind-boggling. Interestingly, Flair was supposed to jump to the WWE three years earlier, to challenge Randy Savage for the WWE Championship in the main event of SummerSlam. However, Flair got cold feet about the move, feeling indebted to the NWA. WWE went with the Mega Powers versus Mega Bucks match on top, instead. Flair versus Savage in 1988 would have been something to behold, though. Both men were in their primes and, although they had great matches in the WWE in the early 90s and then WCW later in the decade, Flair and Savage in the late 80s is a mouth-watering prospect.
