Extreme Rules has featured countless merciless matchups over the years, but no bout in the event's illustrious history has been more brutal than John Cena's 2012 barbaric battle with Brock Lesnar.

Following eight years away from the squared circle, Lesnar returned to WWE the night after WrestleMania 28, quickly laying waste to Cena. The 12-time world champion was still reeling from his loss to The Rock on the grand stage, so he didn't appear to be in the right state of mind going into his anticipated encounter with Lesnar.

The Beast Incarnate held nothing back in his onslaught against Cena, wasting no time in bloodying him with ferocious shots to his head. Cena wrestled the rest of the match a bloody mess, but refused to give in to pain that Lesnar was dishing out.

Despite all the punishment he endured from Lesnar, Cena persevered and came out on top after putting him away with an Attitude Adjustment on a set of steel steps. Lesnar sat shocked and confused by the loss at ringside while Cena sat in the ring holding his injured arm as medical staff tended to him.

Following the match, Cena took a mic and said that although he'd get in trouble for saying it, he was legitimately hurt and might have needed to take a "vacation" for a while. Unsurprisingly, he was back the next night.
