For most of his WWE tenure from 2001 to 2010, Tommy Dreamer was utilized as an enhancement talent, losing to everyone from Big Show to Zack Ryder. That didn't change when ECW was launched as WWE's third band in 2006 as he was rarely ever involved in anything other than squash matches.

Once ECW devolved into a shell of its former self, it was a mystery why Dreamer bothered to stick around. All the other ECW originals including Rob Van Dam, Sabu and Sandman had already departed the company, making Dreamer the last holdout from the Philadelphia based promotion still under contract.

By the spring of 2009, Dreamer finally decided to call it quits. He announced in May that if he didn't win the ECW Championship before his contract expired at the inaugural Extreme Rules pay-per-view, he'd walk away from WWE.

At the event, Dreamer contended for the gold in a hardcore Triple Threat match against Christian and Jack Swagger. It was nowhere near as extreme as ECW matches were known for a decade earlier, but it was a well wrestled bout where all three competitors shined.

Dreamer's ECW Championship victory was easily the highlight of his WWE run, and while the reign may not have lasted long, it was a special moment for the Heart and Soul of ECW.
