Kane had only been in the WWF for a few months by the time calendars turned to 1998, and the popular narrative is that his backstory and characterisation didn't really get weird until 1999-ish. After that, the WWF went off the deep end and mired themselves in Katie Vick-related regrets.

Things were already getting pretty funky long before that.

The Undertaker's vengeful brother went from playing indestructible monster in late-1997 to helping his sibling fend off D-Generation X on the 21 January '98 episode of Raw. Then, he turned full heel again to set up a WrestleMania XIV showdown. Then, 'Taker and Kane sort of aligned later in the year before splitting up again.

Get this: 'Taker turned on Kane at Judgment Day in October, and so did Paul Bearer. Y'know, the guy who had brought Kane in to begin with, and the man who had tried to destroy The Undertaker for years. None of this was easy to follow.
