10 Things You Learn From Watching 1991 On The WWE Network
1. The Magic Sheen Was Wearing Off For The WWF
Throughout 1991, one thing was becoming crystal clear. Namely, the once-incredible sheen that the WWF juggernaut had during the second half of the 1980's was starting to show cracks. Putting on a brave face, the company tried to present the same old fare fans had witnessed with the likes of Hulk Hogan, but it was obvious that something fresh was required.
Never was this more evident than at SummerSlam. Teaming with The Ultimate Warrior, Hogan ran through a limp match against an ageing Iron Sheik (as Colonel Mustafa), General Adnan and Sgt. Slaughter. Even Sid Justice as special guest referee couldn't hide the fact things needed a refresh.
Heading into 1992, things would only get more challenging for Vince McMahon and the WWF. The promotion struggled with the idea of presenting a new direction, and called off a proposed match between Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair for WrestleMania VIII.
In 1990, the WWF was a machine that could do no wrong, but 1991 didn't exactly follow suit. Come 1992, McMahon had to find other avenues to make millions, like taking major pay-per-view events abroad.
