At SummerSlam, Lex Luger beat Yokozuna by count out. Of course, this meant that he didn't leave the pay-per-view as WWF Heavyweight Champion. Luger himself has stated in interviews that he was then told that WrestleMania X would be the site of his big title victory, but irreparable damage had been done to his heroic character at SummerSlam.

Heading into the 1993 Survivor Series, Lex captained a team called 'The All-Americans'. Alongside The Undertaker and The Steiner Brothers, he lastly defeated Ludvig Borga of 'The Foreign Fanatics' (a team also involving Yokozuna, Crush and Quebecer Jacques) to pick up the main event win.

Fans did cheer Luger as he stood on the second rope waving the United States flag, but there was something missing. He wasn't given as big a pop on his way to the ring as Bret Hart had earlier in the show, and the same could be said for Randy Savage (who had been involved in the opening match).

By failing to come through on a virtual guarantee at SummerSlam of winning the WWF Title, Lex looked like a loser. It'd be almost impossible for the WWF to rebuild him in time for WrestleMania X, the spark was gone.
