It's hardly a revelation to claim such, but Hulk Hogan's WWF Heavyweight Title win at WrestleMania IX was wholly unnecessary. Looking back on the pay-per-view, it's almost easy to see why Vince McMahon decided to book things this way. After all, Hogan had been a proven success for his promotion, and this title victory would be a huge surprise for his fans.

It also avoided the need for a heel win to end the show, continuing that triumphant babyface trend 'Mania had become known for. Still, it was a mistake that would set the WWF back to square one after they had attempted to move on from the likes of Hogan.

Squashing Yokozuna, who had whipped top names such as Randy Savage and Bret Hart, Hulk made the WWF's new monster heel look substandard. It's deflating to watch Hogan parade around the ring victorious, knowing that he would depart the company just a few short months later.

Worse, Bret Hart was forced to endorse Hogan's acceptance of Yokozuna and Mr. Fuji's challenge. It's not hard to see why fans who had embraced the idea of Hart on top were left with a bad taste in their mouths afterwards.
