10 Things You Learn From Watching 1994 On The WWE Network
3. Undertaker Vs. Undertaker Belonged On SummerSlam's Mid-Card
Vanquished by a bevy of heels during a Casket Match with Yokozuna at the Royal Rumble, The Undertaker disappeared from screens until the Summer of 1994. Before his return, Ted DiBiase started crowing about the fact he now called the shots with 'Taker, but something didn't add up. DiBiase's Undertaker was physically different to the original.
This all led to an Undertaker vs. Undertaker showdown for SummerSlam. As far-fetched and silly as the story was, it didn't really seem out of place in the company. Regardless of this, there's no way such a ponderously slow match should have headlined the biggest pay-per-view of the Summer months.
To think that a red-hot Steel Cage war between brothers Bret and Owen Hart was relegated to going on second from last because of this is stunning. The Hart siblings went well over half an hour, yet the 'Battle Of The Undertakers' dud only went a shade under 9 minutes in the headline slot.
Perhaps that was a blessing in disguise, but had 'Taker vs. 'Taker happened in the mid card the show would have had a much better vibe. It simply didn't belong in the main event.
