10 Things You Need To Know About Past WWE Road To WrestleManias

4. Triple H Vs. Orton At WrestleMania 21 Scrapped

Randy Orton was WWE's golden boy. He as always going to be pushed, based on his family connections and the fact that he had the desired look that the company goes for. Kind of like a Roman Reigns for the mid-2000s. The master of the RKO was a very effective, chicken***t heel and really began to hit his stride in late 2003 after suffering a couple of injury setbacks. The Evolution member shined in matches with Shawn Michaels, Rob Van Dam, Edge and, famously, Mick Foley. It was after his gutsy performance against the Hardcore Legend that Orton began to hear the sound of cheers. He was getting over as a babyface. Or so WWE thought. He was actually more of a 'cool heel', somebody who was a great bad guy but that some fans couldn't help but cheer for. After beating Chris Benoit for the belt at SummerSlam '04, WWE decided to officially turn him into a good guy. The plan was for Orton to turn face and feud with Evolution leader Triple H, leading to a big title match at WrestleMania 21. The thing was, Orton bombed in the babyface role. He was just too unlikeable and he looked so much less comfortable than he had as a heel. Randy dropped the title to Triple H after only one month. The two had their big blow-off two months earlier at the 2005 Royal Rumble in what was a very good Last Man Standing match. WWE wisely switched Orton heel to feud with The Undertaker and Batista, who huge face reactions caught everyone by surprise, took his spot in the main event with Triple H.
