10 Times A Major WWE Championship Changed Hands On "The Road To WrestleMania"

3. Charlotte Def. Asuka For The SmackDown Women's Championship (SmackDown, 2019)

The main event of WrestleMania 35 should have been easy.

Becky Lynch had beef with Ronda Rousey. Ronda Rousey was the Raw Women's Champion. Becky vs. Ronda at 'Mania. Right?

Well, as it turns out, not right, because we all forgot that Charlotte Flair existed.

WWE were desperate to cram Charlotte into this match and so they did, by simply taking Lynch out and putting Flair in. It really was as simple as that.

Lynch fought her way back into the match, making it a triple threat, but Vince still didn't feel like the match had high enough stakes. He couldn't add any more wrestlers, so he decided to add more titles.

On the 26 March edition of SmackDown, Charlotte challenged Asuka for the SmackDown Women's Championship, which Asuka had won from Becky at TLC.

In a shocking move, WWE put the SmackDown belt on Charlotte, denying Asuka her WrestleMania moment and making the triple threat a Winner Takes All match for both belts.

In hindsight, this did add another level of intrigue to the match and made it seem a lot more big time, but most fans would have still preferred a one-on-one match between Rousey and Lynch.
