10 Times A Special Guest Referee Actually Improved A Wrestling Match

3. The Rock Vs. Triple H (Smackdown, 1999) - Ref: Shawn Michaels

By now it should be obvious that Michaels' presence just seems to make a lot of things better, which is why he's no stranger to popping into the ring as a ref. (Also, it was the ideal way to utilize him in small portions while letting him nurse his back injury.) But in this particular match, Michaels wasn't just some added flair wearing bike shorts. He was the damn maestro. Michaels was pretty much doing visual commentary throughout the match, feeding the action with every motion. And as the Commissioner, Michaels did everything he could to appear impartial for the duration of the match, keeping Shane McMahon from interfering and even going so far as to eject Chyna from ringside after he caught her giving The Rock a low blow. But as The Rock had the match (and WWE Championship) all but won, he went to drop The People's Elbow...only to be met with Sweet Chin Music from the guest referee. It was a shocking moment that paid off because Michaels had played the beats so convincingly before that. The superkick truly seemed to appear out of nowhere, and gave us one of the most surprising finishes to a match in Smackdown history.
