10 Times A Special Guest Referee Actually Improved A Wrestling Match

4. The Undertaker Vs. Triple H (WrestleMania XXVIII) - Ref: Shawn Michaels

Hey, look at that, another match with Shawn Michaels as the referee. Kinda seems like this guy knows his way around a ref uniform. This was one of the better, most intense buildups for a special guest referee this side of Mike Tyson, with Michaels giving a barrage of promos that really touted his involvement in what would become "the end of an era," even referencing how Undertaker ended his own career a couple of years prior. The action inside the ring was meager, to put it nicely. Unfortunately, on the biggest stage of them all, both Undertaker and Triple H failed to live up to the physicality of their match at the previous year's WrestleMania. In fact, with the exception of a couple well-placed spots (specifically, a series of barbaric chair shots to a defenseless Undertaker), most of the high drama came from Shawn's involvement. It wasn't Hunter's vicious assaults on the Undertaker that worked (we'd seen him do this kind of thing a million times before), it was HBK stepping in to protect Taker, while struggling with whether or not to end the match. Watching Shawn make the count on his old friend, and kneeling beside him after the match was finished, was an emotional moment. And that hug he gave to Undertaker? Jeez. Tissues were in short supply that night.
