10 Times ECW Was The Most Insane Wrestling Company In The World

8. Beulah & Kimona, Sitting In A Tree...

Looking back at ECW, it is amazing how well some of it stands up. The feud between Raven and Tommy Dreamer for one, a multi-layered conflict that included history, social pressures, complex character development and intricate creativity, remains one of pro wrestling’s great feuds. The various love triangle (occasionally extended to a square) elements of the story? Not so much.

So Beulah was rejected by Tommy and then sided with Raven. She eventually dropped Raven and went back to Tommy, claiming to be pregnant. Raven replaced Beulah with Kimona, but Kimona soon dumped Raven for Douglas. All of this led to the reveal that Beulah wasn’t pregnant and she was actually cheating on Tommy with Kimona. In order to ram the whole thing home, Beulah and Kimona shared a raunchy on-screen, erm, session, one that was quickly deemed too controversial for TV.

ECW was ahead of the wrestling curve when it came to raunchy storylines, and the lip-locking enjoyed by Beulah and Kimona was the testosterone-fuelled highpoint. The ‘testosterone-fuelled’ part of that is important, as this story was less about pushing boundaries when it came to same-sex relationships and more about hot girls making out. Still, it was ECW pushing an envelope that other wrestling companies weren’t willing to touch at the time.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
