10 Times ECW Was The Most Insane Wrestling Company In The World
9. Crucifying The Sandman
Does it get any more insane than reprising the murder of our lord and saviour? You know an angle is all sorts of batsh*t when Raven, the man responsible for the crucifixion, has to come out and apologise to the live crowd for what they have just seen. It took a lot to silence the ECW fans, but they were shocked into quietude here.
The feud between Raven and The Sandman was the making of both men. It was also one of the iconic beefs of ECW’s early years, a storyline-heavy conflict that pushed boundaries and captivated audiences in droves. Raven managed to brainwash Sandman’s wife and son in a story that was all sorts of shocking at the time, but it was the conclusion of this feud that really took the proverbial biscuit.
Sandman was reunited with his family, only for Raven and his nest to lay waste to the hero, before stringing him up on a wooden cross and, for all intents and purposes, crucifying him. Kurt Angle was famously in attendance, and the Olympic Hero was so offended that he threatened to sue the company if they ever showed footage of him there. The crowd was shocked, and Raven himself had to come back out, break character, and apologise.
