10 Times Jim Cornette Got It Absolutely Right
5. The State Of (Some) Modern Wrestling!
Cornette's popularisation of the "flippy guy" meme to denounce the artificiality of modern wrestling has led many to believe that he loathes it. That it has passed him by.
That isn't true. He recently fawned over the NXT Tag Team Championship sequel between American Alpha and The Revival at TakeOver: The End, despite its thoroughly modern, content-stuffed approach - and not just for their athleticism, which is beyond reproach.
Cornette joined the wrestling community in bestowing lavish praise on the Revival, in particular, for their exemplary use of tag team psychology and manipulation of emotion. Cornette, despite having the best seat in the house to several tag team classics in the eighties, received its procession of inventions as a fan - even having to rewind some sequences to work out how they did them safely.
Cornette is, contrary to some criticisms, capable of recognising the merits of the modern style - just not when the Young Bucks are involved. His criticisms come not from a place of bitterness, but from a desire to see widespread improvements to the business he has passionately dedicated his life to.
This is a man who cherishes the development of talent for the advancement of the industry. In telling The Bucks that they're not strong enough to remove a greased-up string from a cat's *ss, he's actually imploring them to tone down their Superkick-heavy act so as to not dilute it.
