The storyline where Kane had his mask removed led to all sorts of crazy angles for Kane in 2003. During the July 14, 2003 edition of Raw, beloved WWE announcer Jim Ross sat down with Kane for an exclusive interview. He tried to talk some sense into Kane because Kane overreacted any time somebody made fun of him. Steve Austin was a co-GM of Raw following his retirement. He was in the ring trying to talk some sense into Kane when it looked like Kane was going to attack JR. Austin told Kane they were trying to help him. Kane said that the only way to know why he does the things he does is if you experience it yourself. That's when Kane took things to another level as he punched JR and then poured gasoline on him. People that were working at the interview tried to calm him down, but Kane lit some matches and then tossed them onto JR. That's when "JR" (or his stunt double) started screaming as JR was literally on fire. A fire extinguisher put the fire out, but JR was hurt badly by it. It was a way to put over Kane as a madman by doing something extreme like lighting WWE's most beloved announcer on fire.
