If 2008 was a vintage WWE year, then the feud between Chris Jericho and Shawn Michaels was a large part of the reason why.

And it began, fairly innocuously, after HBK scored a controversial victory over Batista at Backlash, a match which Jericho - at the time, a mild-mannered good guy - was appointed to referee.

Tension was building, but slowly, and it only reached boiling point at SummerSlam, when Jericho - now the self-appointed moral arbiter of the WWE, in a proper-heel suit and tie - inadvertently clocked his adversary's wife in the jaw.

After returning to a hero's welcome not 12 months prior, it was always going to take something special to turn the fans against him, and a bitterly personal feud with HBK - growing more intense with each pay-per-view - was just the ticket.
