Ric Flair’s retirement match was always going to be a good match, no matter the setting. Sure, his in-ring performance was far from elite, but his storied career had spanned over 35 years at that point, and it’s inevitable end would bring tears to the eyes of fans around the world. It could have been against a broomstick, and Flair would have found a way to manipulate the fans emotions.

However, Shawn Michaels did what few others could have done - He turned a potentially good match into a classic.

The combination of Michaels’ unmatchable in-ring prowess & Flair’s ability to play to the crowd resulted in a classic Old Yeller-esque tale, with Michaels more than making up for Flair’s lacking in-ring skill. After a match full of stiff chops, figure-fours and two moonsaults from Michaels that left our hearts in our throats, The Nature Boy’s career was over.

Shawn Michaels brought a level of technical skill to the match that few would have expected, and few others could have done it as well as ‘The Heartbreak Kid’.
