10 Times The Main Event Was The Worst Match On A WWE Show

WrestleMania VII saw one of the most distasteful angles in WWE history, with Hulk Hogan defending the USA against “Iraqi Sympathiser” Sergeant Slaughter. The storyline bombed and ticket sales for the event were disastrous, so naturally, WWE decided to keep it running for that year’s SummerSlam.

To make matters worse, into the fray were flung Ultimate Warrior, General Adnan, and the Iron Sheik in the guise of Colonel Mustafa. The heel team had a combined age of well over a hundred, Hogan’s schtick was starting to get a little stale, and Warrior had other things on his mind (namely holding up Vince McMahon for as much money as he could grab).

Slaughter does his level best, giving a commendably dedicated performance in a character he had deep reservations about, but there’s too much going against this match. This was a cartoonish era for the business, but watching three middle-aged men scrap with a flailing Hogan and a disinterested Warrior goes from colourful fun to unseemly nonsense.

The card, on the whole, isn’t exactly full of winners, which tells you just how dire this encounter was.
