As calendars turned to October, 1997, The Undertaker was celebrating close to 7 years in the WWF spotlight as a top name. The idea of debuting a character to play the role of his on screen brother was pitched, and it would have probably been simple for 'Taker to shoot it down as unnecessary. He didn't decide to do that.

At In Your House: Badd Blood, Undertaker was facing Shawn Michaels in the first ever Hell In A Cell bout. Towards the conclusion of the entertaining scrap, Kane made his first appearance, tearing off the Cell door and hitting his 'brother' with a Tombstone Piledriver. It was a shocking debut.

Suddenly, The Undertaker's story had been diluted, and that represented a risk to the character. Kane is naturally still a part of the WWE product today, and it proved to be a shrewd decision to introduce the guise when management did. It was also admirable of Undertaker to agree that it was a good idea, rather than being selfish.
