10 Times The Wrong Wrestler Won
5. The Undertaker Over CM Punk (Hell In A Cell 2009)
After middling success as a babyface, CM Punk struck a nerve with audiences when he turned heel on beloved babyface Jeff Hardy in 2009. Espousing a holier than thou attitude thanks to his straight edge lifestyle, Punk infuriated fans everywhere and quickly became the number one heel on SmackDown. After ousting hated nemesis Hardy from the company entirely, CM Punk was the World Heavyweight Champion and pictured front and centre on Friday nights.
That was at least until The Undertaker returned. Whilst their feud was entertaining enough, Punk was never permitted to look even vaguely close to 'Taker’s level and their matches were short, one sided affairs. At Hell In A Cell, 'Taker decimated Punk and sent him right back to the midcard where he remained hugely over with fans despite the sudden lack of a push. It would be almost two years before Punk managed to climb back up the card.
Hell In A Cell would’ve been the perfect time to debut Straight Edge Society convert Luke Gallows who could’ve helped Punk secure the win but it was not to be. 'Taker would go on to have a decent world title reign that mostly served as filler until the Shawn Michaels WrestleMania feud could resume. It was ultimately not worth the hindrance it imposed on a popular, newer star at the time.
