2. Feast Or Fired Match Introduces Symbolic Briefcases
Some nine years ago WWE gave us another innovation when they introduced the Money in the Bank Ladder match. Now the concept of throwing several wrestlers into a ladder match and letting the spots happen was very exciting, but the real intrigue was the prize: the briefcase that held the contract for a title shot. Unlike typical number one contender matches, the MITB allowed the challenger to choose whenever and wherever he had his Championship match, and thus the tradition of the heel, or sometimes babyface, surprising the champion with an impromptu match. This became known as "cashing in the briefcase." Fast forward to 2007 and TNA introduced a very different match known as Feast or Fired. Now I'll grant you the FOF match could not be further from a ladder match, but the prize is the same ... sort of. Four briefcases. Three contain title shots (for the World, Tag and X-Division Championships), one contains a pink slip meaning whoever obtains that briefcase is fired from TNA. Yes, there was a match held annually (and brought back last year) where several wrestlers would fight to "win" a one-in-four chance of getting fired. Anyway, the three men who were lucky enough to earn the title shots would carry their briefcases for the rest of the year until they elected to "cash them in". Yes that was the expression used whenever a contracted was invoked, even though the FOF match had nothing to do with money or banks. To be fair to TNA though, the briefcase holders more often than not have cashed in their contracts in traditional matches.
As a wrestling fan I've flown across the Atlantic for the last five years specifically to attend WrestleMania (28 and 30) as well as TNA, ROH, Evolve, Chikara and most recently PWG.
I may have a problem!
But if you're reading my work then you probably love wrestling too, so lets focus on that!
