3. Screwjob Scheming

As Shawn Michaels' best friend and someone who was already deep within WWE's political web by late 1997, Triple H was closer to the Montreal Screwjob than most, but the extent of his involvement in the era's most infamous moment is rarely mentioned.

'The Game' was no observer at Survivor Series 1997. It was him, not Michaels or Vince McMahon, who came up with the precise plan that sent Bret Hart packing to WCW. This is according to Shawn, who wrote in his book, Heartbreak & Triumph, that Hunter was the first person to suggest a full-on screwjob, saying, "f*** Bret. If he doesn't want to do business with us, we'll do business for him."

Triple H then came up with the set piece that saw the Michaels vs. Hart bout waved off when 'The Hitman' was stuck in his own Sharpshooter, but didn't tap out.

This places 'The Game' at the heart of a formative moment in his company's history. Hart's decision to leave sparked the Screwjob, not Triple H, but in devising this chain of events, Hunter is partly responsible for a night that changed wrestling forever.
