10 Times Wrestlers Botched Their Biggest Moment
6. Gangrel
Getting to grips with the mic was one of David Heath’s biggest opportunities as Gangrel, though it cumulated in the decimation of his push.
Vampires are infamous for their immortality, yet Gangrel died on live TV.
Hyped as The Brood finally breaking their silence, Gangrel took centre stage leaving Edge and Christian wincing from the sidelines. Nobody wanted to hear Gangrel discuss his “thoughts and feelings”, and while he promised to do so, his words were far more esoteric. He failed to explain to anyone “the mystery of life and the hereafter”, and confusingly referred to The Undertaker as both an iron fisted oppressor and “a guiding light” that showed The Brood the way.
Regardless of the script’s quality, it was Heath’s delivery that tanked the segment, reading his lines with the same cadence you slow your voice to when giving a phone number. He would have been wise to modify his natural voice, as Mark Calaway does as The Undertaker, to a gruff and intimidating tone befitting a creature of the night.
Heath’s performance wouldn’t have been out of place during a Tommy Wiseau led table read. The promo was further hindered by his choices to grin like it was picture day and chuckle like a jolly grandfather.
