10 Times Wrestlers Shot Themselves Into A Work

Saddled at home with a severe knee injury, Matt Hardy was coming off the worst feud of his career with perennial bad storyline machine Kane. Mr Mattitude probably figured the worst was over. Sadly, life was about to throw him a very ugly curveball. Hardy's girlfriend Lita and his buddy (the then-married) Edge had shacked up on the road.

Understandably devastated, Hardy made the cardinal sin of airing the dirty laundry online. Unsettled by his behaviour and the embarrassment of such a story coming to light, WWE fired Hardy. While Edge and Lita received intense crowd heat and chants of 'You Screwed Matt', Hardy took to the dirtsheets and magazines such as PowerSlam to further bury the pair and WWE as a whole in interviews.

After a brief turn in Ring of Honour, Hardy returned to WWE for a worked-shoot angle where he jumped Edge backstage. Presented as an unplanned assault from an unhinged former employee, WWE had Hardy call everyone by their real names and even call out John Laurinaitis (a good 6 years before he started embarrassing himself as Big Johnny) over his sacking.

With Edge and Lita now an on-screen couple to cash in on the heat, everyone just kind of forgot about Kane's involvement and the Hardy vs. Edge feud was born. Sadly, as Hardy came to learn the hard way, WWE hadn't really forgiven him for his earlier behaviour...
