For the second year in a row Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was chosen as the city to host the Royal Rumble and for a second year in a row the city relentlessly booed the ending to the Rumble. After Roman Reigns split from The Shield the prior year, where fans at one time were entirely behind him, his cheers started diminishing more and more. He quickly was labelled as the next John Cena. Not just for potential to be their flagship performer but for the deadly polarizing reactions he was inciting with crowds.

The Rumble crowd that night was already worked up by fan favourite Daniel Bryan getting eliminated early on in the match. Reigns won the Rumble by spearing Rusev and throwing him over the top rope that garnered a heavily negative reaction from the crowd. It was a staggering reception, given the most popular wrestler in the world Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson stopped by and made a surprise run-in at the event to help Reigns win when he was being attacked by Big Show and Kane. Yet the crowd still extremely disliked Reigns.

Rock was even taken aback by the reaction when raising Reigns’ hand in victory that night. #CancelWWENetwork once again trended, this time with more effect. Vince McMahon had to address it in a conference call and WWE had to go so far as to run a new promotion where new subscribers could watch the following month February for free.
