10 Times Wrestling Referees Really F**ked Up!
9. Teddy Long Screws Up And Doesn’t Care
Before he was hollering and making tag matches weekly on SmackDown as the GM, Teddy Long was officiating matches for WWE. One match he refereed, in particular, has proven popular online for Teddy not giving a damn about screwing up the finish.
At the Royal Rumble (1999) Gangrel squared up against X-Pac for the European Championship, which X-Pac was booked to win. Following a crossbody by X-Pac, Gangrel rolled him up for the pin. Teddy Long started counting too soon and didn’t give X-Pac enough chance to break out of the pin, covering 1-2-3. After an awkward few moments X-Pac, Gangrel and Teddy Long continued on with the match as if nothing had happened. The commentators tried to cover it up as boos from the crowd set in, knowing they had witnessed a live botch.
Afterwards, when others would be fearing a fine or a firing, Teddy Long hilariously kept taking out his earpiece, likely sick and tired of the abuse coming his way through the headset from Vince McMahon and others for the botched pin.
Teddy eventually counted the correct 3 count when X -Pac hit the X-Factor for the decisive win to retain his title.
