If the Fingerpoke of Doom is the wrestling moment we keep talking about for all the wrong reasons, then the Money in the Bank 2011 ending is the one we keep fawning over for all the right ones.

The perfect story, the perfect characters, the perfect ending, this was pro wrestling perfection. CM Punk’s WWE contract was running down as he was given a WWE Championship match against John Cena. Punk incorporated that into the storyline as he claimed he would leave with the title.

Then, came the legendary Pipebomb promo which changed the very face of the industry. If there ever was any single moment that altered the landscape it was that right there. WWE for their part played the narrative exactly as they should have. Vince McMahon, Triple H, the Board, everyone got involved. The stakes for this match at that year’s Money in the Bank could not have been higher.

The hype had reached the point where it seemed impossible for the match to live up to it. Somehow, it actually exceeded it.

Punk’s hometown crowd created an unearthly atmosphere, the in-ring work was masterful, and every plot device imaginable was infused into the match’s narrative. A Cena win was teased, Vince attempted a screwjob, even a Money in the Bank cash-in was attempted. In the end, they all failed. Punk won, before blowing that iconic kiss to Vince as he made off with the boss’s prized possession - presumably forever.
