10 Times Wrestling Shows Ended In Scandals

7. Starrcade 1998

Sigh. WCW should honestly get their logo inserted next to shooting oneself in the foot in the dictionary of phrases. The company produced a steady flow of blunder after blunder in the late '90s that eventually sealed their fate. The Sting-Hogan fiasco of Starrcade 1997 was spectacular, but it was perhaps what they did to Goldberg the following year that put them on the path of no return.

Bill Goldberg had been a phenomenon. His unstoppable monster push had been handled to perfection. He demolished foe after foe with little effort. And the longer matches he had, such as the one with DDP at Halloween Havoc, played up to that story perfectly. All of this meant WCW had every tool necessary to build an amazing story around Big Bad Bill and the man who would finally topple him.

Of course, an important part of that was choosing the right man. And WCW chose…. Kevin Nash. Kevin bloody I-tore-my-quad Nash. The two faced off at 1998’s Starrcade showcase, where Bill defended his world title against the nWo co-founder. No prizes for guessing this did not have a clean finish.

Near the end, after a bunch of interferences, Scott Hall literally shocked Goldberg with a cattle prod. This allowed Nash to hit his finisher and win, and in one single “shocking” moment, WCW had infuriated their entire fan base. Some of whom probably never returned.

After battling Galactus and pinning Hulk Hogan in the main event of Wrestlemania, I've taken a break from living in fantasy worlds, to focus on writing about them. I'm a comic book geek, a wrestling mark, a break dancer, and a scientist. One of those things may not be true.
