10 Times Wrestling Shows Ended In Scandals
6. Unforgiven 2008
This is a real 50-50 with regards to what went down and the subsequent reaction. The build-up to the event had been centered around the three Championship Scramble matches. The new concept had just the right amounts of chaos to get everyone excited. However, since this is WWE, there was always going to be some unnecessary shenanigans to go with it.
During the night of the show, World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk got taken by Randy Orton and his burgeoning Legacy stable (that went well didn’t it?). This of course was a real kick in the teeth for most fans who had been getting the Straight Edge underdog champion, and desperately wanted to see him prevail.
Still, there was hope that maybe this was all a ruse designed to build tension. Perhaps Punk would make a triumphant return and brave the odds to keep his title. Surely the rising babyface champ won’t just get written off like that. Well… yeah, that is exactly what happened.
Punk was injured beyond repair, meaning we were guaranteed a new champion. This got even more bizarre as management were able to find a replacement for Punk in the main event: that being one Chris Jericho. Jericho would then go on to win the belt.
Sure, down the line this added another dimension to Y2J’s now legendary feud with Shawn Michaels, but Punk deserved so much more than this scandalous end to his maiden reign.
