People have always debated the authenticity of the fan-voting in the WWE Taboo Tuesday and Cyber Sunday PPVs. While the fans are justified, considering WWE's track record, the Intercontinental Championship match at the inaugural Taboo Tuesday event in 2004 was a point in WWE's favor.

Shelton Benjamin won the fan vote with 37%, beating out fourteen other competitors. He defeated Chris Jericho in the opening contest and won his first singles title in WWE. However, while speaking on the WWE Network show Ruthless Aggression, Shelton Benjamin claimed his winning the title was not the original plan. He revealed he didn't know he was winning the title until Jericho didn't kick out during the final pinfall.

Speaking on the AEW Unrestricted podcast, Shelton Benjamin claimed he expected Batista to be the one to get chosen that night. Chris Jericho mentioned in his book Undisputed that he and Benjamin had to improvise the match on the spot as he didn't know the latter would be the one to face him, and claimed that he expected Batista or Christian as his opponents.
