Ever since Goldberg returned to WWE in 2016, wrestling fans started speculating about a potential match between the WCW legend and Roman Reigns. WWE officials took their time before booking that match, and Reigns stepped up to challenge Goldberg for the Universal Championship at WrestleMania 36.

However, the pandemic turned all plans to waste, and WrestleMania 36 went from being a stadium event with an estimated attendance of 70,000 fans to taking place inside an empty Performance Center. Apart from that setback, Roman Reigns backed out of the event, citing he was immunocompromised due to his previous health issues with leukaemia.

WWE had to honor his request and find a last-minute replacement in Braun Strowman to face Goldberg for the title at the event. Speaking on an episode of WWE's The Bump, Strowman recalled the moments that led to his first World title run in WWE. Since he wasn't booked for the event, Strowman decided to head to Wisconsin to be with his family. He had already driven 21 hours and was only an hour away from home when he got the call from WWE informing him of the last-minute change. WWE sent a private jet to get Strowman back to Orlando and taped the match, which saw Strowman defeat Goldberg to win his first Universal Championship.
