10 Times WWE Creative Changed A Match On The Fly
3. Chris Jericho Becoming The Undisputed Champion
To this day, Chris Jericho uses every opportunity to brag about the night he defeated The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin to become the first-ever Undisputed WWE Champion. The historic moment happened at the 2001 Vengeance PPV, where Chris Jericho first defeated The Rock to win the WCW World Heavyweight Championship and then defeated Austin to win the WWE Championship.
However, he wasn't Vince McMahon's original choice to get that spot. Speaking with Chris Van Vliet, Kurt Angle revealed that he was Vince McMahon's first choice to become the inaugural Undisputed Champion. Angle recalled McMahon calling him two weeks before the event and telling him he would become the Undisputed Champion but changed his mind five days prior and told Angle that he wanted Jericho to have the spot.
During an interview with Inside the Ropes, Chris Jericho revealed that he didn't know about the decision until the day of the event. He was minding his business at catering and eating his food when Vince McMahon walked in with The Undertaker and made a snarky comment about business going down the toilet because WWE was putting the Undisputed title on Jericho that night.
