10 Times WWE Did Exactly What The Wrestlers DIDN'T Want
3. The Montreal Screwjob
It initially was a stretch inserting wrestling’s most famous screwjob into this list. But, 1) Bret Hart refused to drop the WWE Championship to Shawn Michaels in front of a Canadian audience, 2) Vince pulled the dirtiest trick in the game (woo) and Bret ended up dropping the title to Shawn Michaels in front of a Canadian audience. Hence, it qualifies.
Once its eligibility is confirmed, holy peanuts, how can this not be near the top?! The story is the most repeated and remembered tale in wrestling history. Bret Hart was leaving the WWF for bitter rivals WCW, right at the height of the Monday Night Wars.
Of course, what made this crazy situation even more complicated was the fact that Hart at the time also held the company’s top prize. The tension this created was unlike anything seen before, or anything seen since.
Vince wanted the Excellence of Execution to drop the belt to Michaels at Survivor Series, Hart refused, and the rest is history.
