10 Times WWE Disrespected Rey Mysterio

7. Eddiesploitation

Mysterio's World Heavyweight Title win was made possible, unfortunately, due to the death of his close friend Eddie Guerrero. Whilst Mysterio had proven he could carry a main event programme with Guerrero in 2005 (their feud was the most pushed on WWE TV) it's uncertain whether WWE saw him as anything more than a potential US Champion. When Guerrero died, WWE knew they needed a new latino star. They had a ready-made one in Mysterio and the decision was made to push him to the top, riding a wave of Eddie Guerrero nostalgia. The Eddie tribute shows were a nice touch and nobody had a problem with WWE referencing Latino Heat on TV, but things soon took a regrettable turn. In order to goad Rey into putting his 'Mania title shot on the line in a match, Randy Orton claimed that Eddie Guerrero wasn't in heaven but was actually in hell. It was a deeply distasteful and uncalled for remark. Orton made more references to Eddie and many felt that WWE had went too far. The Eddie exploitation continued during Rey's feud with Chavo in late 2006. Chavo turned on Rey, claiming that Rey was a 'leach living off Eddie Guerrero's name'. Then Eddie's widow Vickie got involved and turned on Rey in a desperate attempt at cheap heat.
