From the get-go, the purpose of pairing Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase with Randy Orton in The Legacy was to get the young guns over as the future of WWE, similar to how Evolution served as the vehicle for Orton and Batista as main event stars.

Legacy was successful in that respect at first as fans rallied for Rhodes and DiBiase to stand up to Orton at various points throughout their run. There were rumblings DiBiase, not Rhodes, was slated to get the big push once the group disbanded, so at least someone would have benefited from the breakup.

Ultimately, it was Orton who was the biggest babyface coming out of Legacy, not either of the other two.

Orton was arguably the hottest babyface on the roster that year, but Rhodes and DiBiase were hardly any more over when Legacy ended than when it began. DiBiase was given his father's gimmick (which is always a recipe for disaster) while Rhodes was drafted to the SmackDown brand.

It was there that he reinvented himself and debuted the "dashing" gimmick, and as entertaining as that was, he wasn't the main event talent he should have been. Instead of winning at his first WrestleMania, he was punted in the head by the man he should have given his comeuppance to.
