10 Times WWE Employees Hated The Current Product
6. Bret Hart
Bret Hart has got a somewhat unfair reputation among the wrestling community as being bitter - a family member dying during a dumb stunt and a career-ending concussion do things to a guy.
Regardless, when it comes to in-ring technique there is no better mind than ‘The Hitman’. Discussing the current product, Bret too was concerned about storytelling, explaining in a justified but braggadocious comparison:-
“I think I was a better storyteller than any of the wrestlers they’ve got today. I watched WrestleMania this year and there’s no drama anymore. They do some amazing stuff, there are some incredible athletes, but people don’t know how to tell a story. Wrestling has it’s flows, it will change again as people get tired of the ‘phoney’ wrestling, I watched my match with Davey Boy at Wembley with some journalists in a bar and they almost bought into it like it was real.”
Regarding wrestling and reality, in a post-Kayfabe era it is hard for wrestlers to make their contests look “real”, with fans required to suspend their disbelief. It is an unfair comparison pitting modern fan reaction to the contemporary product against Hart and Smith’s SummerSlam 1992 response. The recent slow build storyline between Bayley and Sasha Banks, and Kevin Owens and Roman Reigns’ rivalry stand as successful storylines despite modern pressures and restrictions.
Hart mentioned fan reactions to Pete Dunne and Tyler Bate as evidence that WWE “might be going back in the other direction.” Recently Bret was kinder saying he was a “big fan” of AJ Styles, Kevin Owen, and Roman Reigns, doing so on The Bump.
