10 Times WWE Failed To Create Main Event Players

2. Billy Gunn (1999)

The problem with some of The Rock's scathing babyface promos during his prime was that he was often bang on with his criticism. That was the case when Billy Gunn won the 1999 King Of The Ring and the WWF dabbled with a top line push for the former New Age Outlaw. What did the people think of this?

Same as Rocky, probably.

According to big Dwayne Johnson, Gunn still 'absolutely sucked'. Behind the scenes, The Rock wasn't sold on the thought of working with Billy either, and that was problematic. On top of all that, Bruce Prichard and Jim Ross have dished details on Gunn's asthma issues; they stopped him from working long matches as a singles star.

Everything was working against 'Mr. Ass' here in '99. Once Rock had dispatched him at SummerSlam in a suspect, by-the-numbers 'Kiss My Ass' match, it was back to the midcard for Billy. The WWF's plan to turn him into a heel sensation in the upper deck had failed, and they quickly reformed the Outlaws a few months later.
