10 Times WWE Failed To Make Dean Ambrose 'The Guy'
8. Not Having Him Wrestle John Cena One On One On PPV
Yes, there was a triple threat title match between Ambrose, John Cena and AJ Styles at a No Mercy. Yes, Ambrose and Cena went one on one on both Raw and SmackDown. And yet, the two never wrestled a singles match on PPV.
Going toe to toe with 'The Face That Runs The Place' at a big event can be a right of passage for potential mega stars. Both of Ambrose's former Shield comrades got the honour, as well as the likes of the aforementioned AJ Styles. You can add Daniel Bryan, CM Punk, and Kevin Owens, among others, to the list too. Getting a victory over the 16 time champ on a big stage is an even bigger deal. Dean however, was never given the green light for such a privilege.
But it's okay: Ambrose did get to defeat the all mighty Cena in a singles encounter... In a contract on a pole match on Raw. Hardly the equivalent of Reigns kicking out of multiple Attitude Adjustments before defeating Cena with a single spear on PPV. The fact this never happened even when Dean was at his hottest shows just how he was viewed by the top brass.
At one time, Cena vs. Ambrose on PPV would have been a big deal and could have stolen the show. Alas, like a lot of things with Dean's WWE career, it was never to be.
