10 Times WWE Got The Royal Rumble Main Event Wrong
2. Royal Rumble 2006
Criticism of the 2006 Royal Rumble traditionally lingers on whether it was right that Rey Mysterio's push should have invoked the memory of Eddie Guerrero in the aid of some cheap cheers - but that match didn't close out the night.
Instead, it was a World Heavyweight Championship bout between Kurt Angle and Mark Henry, a match that was as thrown together as they come, the Olympic Gold Medallist having only been on the same brand as his challenger for a matter of days.
The reason this went on last, so we would eventually learn, was so that Undertaker could come out after the final bell and give Angle the fright of his life. They couldn't have done this in the penultimate match, partly because it meant breaking the ring, and partly because it would have been awkward if the Deadman had to sheepishly turn and walk (or ride) to the back after staring down his opponent so intensely.
The ramifications of not putting Rey Mysterio's Royal Rumble triumph on last were pretty serious, though. It signalled to the audience that the company viewed his WrestleMania coronation as a secondary story, a trend that would be observed right up to the day itself.
