10 Times WWE Got The Royal Rumble Main Event Wrong
3. Royal Rumble 2013
If you manage to convince The Rock to take time out of his now-primary career shooting Hollywood movies to appear on a WWE pay-per-view, you put him in the headline match. No complaints there.
But having him beat CM Punk? That was a bone of contention for a lot of die-hard wrestling fans, who viewed it as inherently damaging to the credibility of the WWE Championship for the man who had held the belt for 434 days to lose it to a part-timer.
It also confirmed to us, as if there was ever any real doubt, that WrestleMania 29's main event would be a straight-up rehash of the previous year's go-home encounter, meaning that the Straight Edge Superstar, off the back of a stellar 18 months, would be left out in the cold.
This seemed personally unfair to Punk himself, but more than that, it was a source of great disappointment for the audience. They would have been far more excited for 'Mania if its marquee match featured the man many saw as the best in the world instead of - or at least in addition to - a pair of aspiring movie stars who could drum up a little mainstream press coverage.
