10 Times WWE Immediately Broke Its Own Rules

2. Vince McMahon Is Too Old To Appear On Television

The Mr. McMahon character is no longer a permanent onscreen presence because Vince McMahon long ago deemed himself "too old" to appear on television.

It's the height of irony; Vince has for years insisted that WWE must be a young person's game, in order to appeal to the young, and has never struggled more to capture the imagination of anybody under the age of 50. This philosophy is imprinted everywhere, from Diesel's dyed hair in 2011 to the robotic quality of the universally young interviewers, and Vince takes the rule so seriously that he himself operates in compliance with it...

...until the ratings start to tank, or there's a victory lap to be taken whenever RAW breaks a fictional and selective viewership record.

This rule is broken at the immediate sign of a chronically bad ratings pattern. When panic sets in, Vincent Button de-ages to pop a rating or put an angle over, either by promising to shake things up or taking a full-force headbutt, as he did in 2017, which itself broke WWE's internal guidelines on unprotected head contact.

Vince last made himself a regular presence to will the KofiMania story over the line, years and years after "retiring" the Mr. McMahon character. If he doesn't get pulled under the ring by the Fiend in about two months, it will be a shock, but hey: perhaps Wyatt can "change" McMahon into an effective pro wrestling promoter again.
